Match the plant to the site, dig no deeper than the root ball, loosen circling roots and water thoroughly after planting.
New plants need consistent moisture while roots establish. Check the soil itself. Rainfall and surface appearance can be misleading.
Use a moderate layer over the root zone and keep mulch away from stems and trunks. Avoid piling it into a “volcano.”
Cold, wind, salt and rapid temperature changes can injure foliage and stems. Wait for the proper season before pruning out questionable wood.
